Tree Swallows are common in Clare during the summer although in general, insectivore birds have been facing widespread declines (Nebel, 2010). We can learn a lot about birds by studying their nests in nest boxes.
Our project
This project has two main objectives:
First: Increase the number of used nest boxes in our area
Second: Learn about our local bird species in Clare
We contribute data to Bird Studies Canada Nest Watch program. Nest Watch is a Canada wide program that studies trends in bird reproduction. Our goal is to set up a nest-box monitoring program for Tree Swallows in Clare but we’re interested in other species as well.
How to participate
This project has 4 participation categories.
- Nest box building and set up: Different species of birds need different sizes of nest boxes. We’ll work with you to find ideal buidling dimensions for different species.
- Offering an appropriate place for a nest box: Let us know if you already have next boxes up at your house or if you think you might have an appropriate place for a nest box. Our nest boxes are free if you participate in our study.
- Study of nest boxes: Anyone can participate and get some hands on experience in ecology. Help us by studying one or multiple nest boxes in Clare.
- As the representative for this project: Encourage participation and help with this project
